LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions is the RELX-owned IP analytics and search business unit that packages several mature products under one umbrella: PatentSight+ for portfolio benchmarking and competitive intelligence, PatentAdvisor for prosecution analytics, and TotalPatent One for global patent search. The evidence is strongest for three practitioner jobs. First, patent teams use TotalPatent One when global prior-art searching across multiple authorities is too slow and fragmented. Second, prosecution teams use PatentAdvisor when office-action strategy cannot rely on gut feel about an examiner, tech center, or appeal path. Third, in-house IP leaders and outside counsel use PatentSight when they need to benchmark portfolio quality, defend board-level strategy, or pressure-test an acquisition target’s patents before a go/no-go decision. The market signal is real but niche: Law-firm case studies for Han Santos and McBee Moore & Vanik, patent-law Reddit mentions for PatentAdvisor and TotalPatent One, and persistent industry coverage in IAM and other IP-specific channels. The tradeoff is that pricing and security are only partially transparent at the umbrella-brand level. TotalPatent One has a public per-search schedule, but PatentSight and PatentAdvisor appear demo-led. I did not find a public product trust center or customer-facing certification page for the suite.

Patent attorney conducting a prior art search for a client's invention spends 2-3 days manually searching USPTO, EPO, and non-patent literature databases — reading hundreds of abstracts, mapping claims to prior art references, and still worrying they missed something in a Chinese or Japanese patent that wasn't translated. The search costs the client $5,000-15,000 and the attorney still can't guarantee completeness

Patent prosecution attorney receives an office action and needs to decide whether to fight, amend, or appeal — but has no data on this specific examiner's grant rate, allowance patterns, or appeal success rate, so the strategy decision comes down to gut feel instead of evidence, and a wrong call burns through the client's prosecution budget on a losing strategy

Corporate development team and outside IP counsel are staring at a target with hundreds of patents and a short deal window, and they need to know whether that portfolio actually protects revenue or is mostly dead weight, so they can make a go or no-go recommendation before the acquisition clock runs out.

Where it fits in your workflow

Before Lexisnexis Intellectual Property Solutions

An invention disclosure, competitive threat, office action, or acquisition target creates an IP question that cannot be answered from a spreadsheet or by manually bouncing between USPTO, EPO, search databases, and outside counsel email threads.

After Lexisnexis Intellectual Property Solutions

After LexisNexis IP surfaces the relevant search set, examiner analytics, or portfolio benchmark, the practitioner still decides whether to file, amend, appeal, abandon, license, or advance an M&A recommendation to management.
