Lawstar
What it is
What It Does
LawStar is a Bluebook citation generator aimed at law students, particularly 1Ls and journal members. Users paste an article or case URL to get a formatted citation, and it abbreviates words per the Bluebook tables automatically. A Chrome extension adds citation buttons to research sites including Westlaw, LexisNexis, HeinOnline and JSTOR. It generates citations for cases, books, periodicals and web sources, and is listed as free to use.
What We Found
LawStar was founded in 2023 and is listed in the Stanford Law CodeX TechIndex. It is a narrow, single-purpose tool rather than a full research platform, best suited to students and journal editors handling citation formatting.
What We Haven’t Verified
- Headquarters, team size, funding
- Whether it remains fully free over time, and citation accuracy across edge cases
