What It Does

Tribute Labs (openlaw.io) started as OpenLaw, a project that connected traditional legal agreements with Ethereum-based smart contracts — letting users draft agreements and tie them to on-chain transactions. The company rebranded to Tribute Labs and shifted its focus toward decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs), building and supporting frameworks such as the Tribute DAO Framework. The legal-contracting side is now part of a broader web3 / blockchain focus rather than a standalone legal product.

What We Found

OpenLaw was founded in 2017 (Brooklyn, NY) by David Roon and Aaron Wright, and at one point partnered with Rocket Lawyer on blockchain-powered contracts. Coverage (Decrypt) reported the OpenLaw-to-Tribute Labs rebrand and pivot to a DAO incubator. The OpenLaw smart-contract framework and Tribute DAO code are open-source on GitHub.

Who It’s For

Web3 / blockchain teams and DAO builders, and lawyers working on smart-contract or on-chain agreement projects. It is a poor fit for mainstream legal practice (litigation, general corporate, in-house) that doesn’t touch blockchain.
